Facebook has silently launched the chat app of their enterprise collaboration software – Workplace – with the screen-sharing feature. TechCrunch first discovered this and has since confirmed it with the officials.
These were two features that the users of Workplace have been asking for a while now, and Facebook has now brought them to the PC and Mac. Workplace is Facebook’s reply to the popular enterprise collaboration software — Slack.
Workplace is currently used by over 14,000 business organizations that pay a fee of $1 to $3 per user for access. With the introduction of screen-sharing, Facebook could potentially break the market for other apps like Skype, which still are not efficient in doing this particular job.
WHAT FACEBOOK HAS TO SAY
Facebook says that the introduction of the app was a no-brainer because an app is always more convenient than a tab in the browser that’s always open. The app has a default notification feature, which alerts the user of new messages when they are too busy to check on the app itself.
Facebook spokesperson Vanessa Chan commented, “This was one of the most widely requested features by customers, so we built it. The desktop app is still in beta and being tested by Workplace customers who are providing feedback that we’ll use to improve the product before a wider rollout.”
TechCrunch also reports that the desktop chat app has a dashboard that shows all the collective data and sharing options that include photos, videos, and GIFs. The screen-sharing feature is convenient as it offers options for partial as well as full-screen sharing.
Facebook is offering beta versions of the app to be downloaded right away. However, people should keep in mind that it would require Windows 7 and above or macOS 10.9 to run the application.
